America is a nation of immigrants, and we welcome people from all over the world. But the last several years have been especially turbulent for our immigrants. What is it like to be an immigrant here today? We spoke with Irina VanPatten, originally from Moldova, about her own experiences and her new book on this subject. Her recently published book, Welcome to America, Welcome Home!: An Immigrant’s Guide to Success, is based on interviews with American immigrants and professionals alike, illuminating successes and hardships as immigrants try to assimilate and succeed in America.
Being an immigrant in any country comes with ups and downs, and cultural differences can lead to memorable moments. We’re all well aware of the bad ones, but Irina is more focused on the good. At the beginning of our conversation, she shares some funny stories from her own life as an immigrant. Language barriers can lead to hilarious misunderstandings!
These moments are what first inspired Irina to write a book. But after the 2016 election, she decided to greatly expand the scope of her writing. In addition to sharing her own anecdotes, Irina interviewed numerous people – from other immigrants to immigration lawyers – to give it a fuller look at immigration. Talking to such diverse people led to some surprising discoveries, which helped enrich her book.
Irina also shares how her view of immigration has changed in the past few years, as well as whether she’s felt a difference in how others treat her. She addresses some of the most common misconceptions about immigrants, and offers her ideas on how people can reach common ground on this subject.
Finally, harkening back to the theme of her book, Irina shares her advice for immigrants who are trying to make a home in America.
