In the past few years, it seems that being politically aware and involved is becoming more and more common, and it’s great to see women and young people play a bigger role in this important sphere. But even as we see a growing presence of women, people of color, people of religious minorities, and millennials in politics, many of us still don’t feel confident enough to join in ourselves. Even if we want to, we often don’t know how. Moreover, how can we raise our children to also get involved in social issues and help change the world?

We spoke to Alexa Bigwarfe, an author, podcast host, and activist. She co-wrote the book, Lose the Cape: The Mom’s Guide to Becoming Socially & Politically Engaged (& How to Raise Tiny Activists), and is a host on the Lose the Cape podcast. Alexa also owns the publishing companies Kat Biggie Press and Purple Butterfly Press. Beyond these many jobs, she plays an active role in politics and social issues. She’s an inspiration to us and to her own children, and in our new interview, she shares valuable advice on how you – and even your children – can get involved.

Beyond being an active and informed voter, how can you be a part of effecting social and political change?

Getting Involved

Taking that first step into becoming socially and politically active can be difficult, but don’t worry. Alexa shares how to ease yourself into the activist realm at a pace you’re comfortable with. She also explains how you can go about choosing a cause. Is it better to focus on one or two issues? Or is it okay to be an activist for multiple issues you care about?

Becoming a social and political activist can be a positive impact for your children, too, and can help in teaching important values. Alexa is passionate about raising “tiny activists.”

But how can you get your children involved? How can they develop an understanding of social and political issues, choose a cause that matters to them, and participate in this sphere? Alexa offers her tips.

Involving the Children

Alexa Bigwarfe offered an empowering discussion that will leave you excited to get involved and raise “tiny activists” of your own. In addition to listening to our new interview, be sure to check out Alexa’s book, Lose the Cape: The Mom’s Guide to Becoming Socially & Politically Engaged (& How to Raise Tiny Activists). It’s the latest in a series of books. You’ll also want to tune into her Lose the Cape podcast.
