People have been talking about the importance of work-life balance for years, but lately, new opinions on the subject are emerging. Though many have taken its value for granted, some are actually starting to reject work-life balance. Some say it’s unattainable, or at least unrealistic. Some say the focus is wrong, and instead we should aim for work-life integration or harmony. Still others point out that we have one life, not two. There are all kinds of perspectives and arguments that lead in different directions.
Let’s take a step back here. What is work-life balance exactly? It refers to the amount of time an individual spends on their career vs. on personal and social activities. The idea is that people need a balance between the two – not too much of one or the other. You don’t want to be a workaholic, but neither do you want to be directionless. The perfect balance between work and life will vary from person to person, and will change over time as personal and career needs evolve.
However, as some arguments point out, most people have a hard time achieving work-life balance because it can be pretty unattainable with our busy schedules. Being unable to reach this goal can leave people feeling like failures or like something’s wrong with them.
