The world can be a dangerous place, and it’s important to know how to stay safe. However, conflict and danger can’t always be avoided. For that reason, everyone – including women and anyone over the age of 50 – should know about self-defense. How can you protect yourself? We spoke with Doug Setter all about keeping yourself safe on our new podcast.
For a crash course in self-defense, watch our new podcast with Doug Setter below:
Doug Setter is a certified fitness instructor with a Bachelor of Human Ecology (Foods and Nutrition) and author of Fit Femme After 50, Flat Gut After 50, Flat Gut After COVID (to be released in December 2021), Stomach Flattening, Reduce Your Alcohol Craving, and One Less Victim: a crime prevention manual. He has been a paratrooper, competitive kick-boxer and marathon runner. As an infantry sergeant, he led a team in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in the former Yugoslavia and later instructed over 300 trainees in military and outdoor skills.
In his late 30s, he combined kick-boxing with exercise and taught women’s cardio kick-boxing with waiting list classes. Then, he teamed up with martial arts instructor and former undercover vice police officer William Bell to instruct self-defense for children, teens, women and welfare investigators.
At age 40, he won a welterweight kick-boxing title belt. Later, he climbed Mt. Rainier (age 47). Through behavior changing, he was able to overcome his poor school marks and complete university with a Bachelor of Human Ecology (Foods & Nutrition). He instructs self-defense and personal training with many clients over the age of 50.
How to Defend Yourself
We begin our discussion with Doug’s background in self-defense for women and people over 50. As he describes, Doug was a sickly kid and faced bullying at school, at work, and at home. To overcome feelings of defenselessness, Doug began lifting weights and practicing martial arts, and eventually joined the army.
Doug reveals why he has chosen to focus on teaching women and older people about self-defense. One thing that he learned in the army and passes on to his clients is that fights are rarely fair. His aim is to teach people to recognize danger before it’s too late.
The world can be a scary place for everyone, but especially for women and older adults. Doug tells us something he wishes every woman knew about self-defense, as well as something he wishes every older adult knew about self-defense. Tune into the podcast to find out what those are!
Even knowing how to defend yourself, manage your stress, and use your anger, the best option is to avoid a fight – physical or otherwise – altogether. How can we de-escalate a tense situation? Doug offers his best advice here.
