Saying “no” can be hard. Declining an invitation or refusing to help with something can feel uncomfortable, unprofessional, and even mean. Even not volunteering for a project can seem like a sort of crime. Even so, it’s important to be realistic about your bandwidth – refusing to take on extra projects prevents you from making promises you can’t keep. Saying “no” to a co-worker is different from saying it to your boss. In both cases, honesty is helpful, as is offering another solution.
Remember, saying “no” doesn’t have to be negative. In fact, it sometimes will actually leave you feeling empowered, as you’ll be better able to set boundaries and focus on what matters to you. Someone who says “yes” to everything is a doormat and usually doesn’t receive much appreciation. That’s because if you’re unable to say “no,” your “yes”es mean very little. By only taking on tasks that you care about, you’ll make your time and effort much more valuable.
But, with that said, saying “no” can still be difficult, especially at work. How do you politely and professionally decline requests from your co-workers? What if it’s your boss? It can feel like a lot is riding on your decision, and there is always pressure to continually accept new responsibilities. You’re not in this alone. Lynn, Amanda, and Rachel are here to provide you with the tools you need to say “no” at work. This webinar will take you through requests from co-workers, bosses, and others, and how to decline them with poise. Learning this skill will allow you to excel in your career while maintaining positive working relationships. Get ready to bring “no” back into your vocabulary.
